about

BRDLND DEMOS is a sort of prelude to my next project, BRDLND; I've already spent months in the conceptual/compositional phase, and in the interim, I put this piece together as a sort of proof-of-concept for the intended sonics of the project; if you are a Sonic Youth fan, you'll get it if I describe BRDLND DEMOS as being to BRDLND as SYR 1 was to A THOUSAND LEAVES (except the DEMOS are not compositionally related to BRDLND; they are only related in instrumentation).

The BRDLND DEMOS are drone improvisations—two long sessions, broken into tracks—one on three prepared guitars and a homemade bass box (all four played live together; the guitars are set up horizontally), and the other on an old Alesis drum machine triggered by birdsong samples via Ableton Live, all processed through analog effects and fed through a Tascam Portastudio 414 mkII.

The BRDLND DEMOS were recorded in two sessions last Fall [2021], one on the bird drums, and the other on the prepared guitar setup. I've layered the drum machine improvisations over the prepared guitar parts so they can interact serendipitously. The only linear editing I did was to split the drum machine recordings into three parts and align them with the first transients of each of three perceived "sections" in the continuous guitar track; any other musical consonance between the two recordings is purely by chance* (*You may notice a synchronicity between bird drum and guitar in section 6; in that instance, I was playing the midi bird drums live alongside the guitars). I also applied some stereo panning to add extra dynamism to the mix.

The BRDLND project is only on hold because I haven't found myself in the right moment to commence recording—a massive undertaking, as I have 211 separate parts to record, all contained in a 3-inch stack of thoroughly shuffled flashcards, just waiting to become sounds, and only weekends to work with—but I still intend to complete it in 2022, hopefully in time for release in the Fall.
